Our review of the sector will help set our goals for 2030

Alistair Smyth, 22 January 2025

Thank you to everyone who’s spoken to me through the NHF’s recent strategic review.

At the end of last year, we heard from nearly 700 of our members, and spoke to a range of stakeholders and residents, to get a comprehensive snapshot of where our sector is right now.

It was so valuable to be able to speak directly with members and stakeholders about the challenges facing the sector now, as well as our strengths. While the impact of a difficult operating environment for social housing over several years featured heavily in our conversations, it was also clear that if the sector has the support it needs from the government, it will do its utmost to help resolve the housing crisis facing millions of households.

Our sector’s sense of purpose is undiminished.

This consultation will help inform our next business strategy, and ensure that our future work is grounded in the issues that matter most to our members.

Across the hundreds of conversations in our strategic review, there were three consistent points that came up time and time again:

  1. The quality of the homes and services delivered to residents is what matters most and is the key to long-term success.
  2. We have an opportunity to secure a period of renewal and growth by partnering with the government on a long-term housing strategy and building wider political consensus.
  3. Public understanding matters.

We need to invest in building the public’s understanding of housing associations and the value our sector brings.

Therefore, based on these insights, there are three overarching priorities that will be reflected in our next business strategy:

  1. Supporting our members to deliver good homes and services for residents.
  2. Influencing and partnering on the long-term housing strategy.
  3. Positioning housing associations as trusted partners with greater public understanding.

We’re now taking these priorities and reviewing them alongside our existing work to create our next business strategy, which will be published in April.

In the meantime, we hope people find our strategic review report an interesting and insightful read.

We’ve produced a well-informed snapshot of where we are in 2025, which will be our foundation to set ambitious goals for 2030.
