Future Homes Standard – interim uplift information

In January 2021, the government released the outcome of a consulatation on the Future Homes Standard, which will require all new build domestic properties to meet higher standards of insulation and prohibit fossil fuel heating systems. This means that as the electricity grid is decarbonised, these homes will require no further work to decarbonise them. The Future Homes Standard will be implemented via changes to building regulations.

The government also proposed an interim uplift to building regulations to make sure homes emit less carbon, protect against over-heating and improve ventilation before the Future Homes Standard comes into effect. You can read our response to the consultation.

In December 2021, the government implemented the interim uplift to building regulations and published new Approved Documents.

The new interim uplift regulations will come into force in June 2022 with transitional arrangements in place. The Statutory Instrument amending the building regulations will be uploaded to legislation.gov.uk.

Transitional arrangements are in place which means that if a building notice, initial notice, or full plans for building work are submitted to a local authority before 15 June 2022, then, provided the building work commences by 15 June 2023, work on that individual building is permitted to continue under the previous standards.

The government plans to start more detailed engagement on the 2025 Future Homes Standard in 2022 and we will ensure we and our members are included in this.
